What Is Acne?
Acne is a very common condition and affects as many as 80% of all adolescents, and often persists into adult life. Pimples can appear on the face, chest and back, though teens most commonly experience breakouts on the forehead, nose and chin. Acne is associated with the overproduction of sebum, an oily substance that forms in the sebaceous glands just under the surface of the skin. This sebum flows out of hair follicles onto the skin to act as a natural moisturizer.
A blockage made up of sebum, dead skin cells and bacteria can develop in the pores. The blockage is microscopic at first, but as it grows it can develop into a blackhead or whitehead.
