Does Wart Care Have to Be So Harsh?

Has it always been this way? The thought of something being burnt or cut off your body is not something that particularly crosses your mind casually. It sounds horrible. Although, in some cases with warts it is warranted, right?

People have been burning and cutting warts out for centuries. Understanding what these methods involve, and how the skin may respond afterward, can help you make a more informed and comfortable decision about what to do next.

Types of Warts These Methods Target:

  • Plantar warts (verrucas)
  • Common warts
  • Peringual warts
  • Mosaic warts
  • Stubborn warts

There are softer options available. H-Warts Formula is pain free and the chances of you wincing at how it works are very low. It works with your body over time to support healthier skin and most importantly using the formula is a comfortable addition to your routine.

What are "harsh" or aggressive wart options?

How do they work and why are they considered harsh? Here's a list of the different methods and what to expect:

Burning:

  • This is also known as electrosurgery
  • Whoever is getting this most likely will undergo local anesthetic
  • It is a needle that is put into your wart that generates intense heat
  • The intense heat from the needle dehydrates and vaporizes the wart
  • The physical scraping or removal of the wart after its burnt out is called curettage
  • This process might happen more than once if everything is not fully removed after the first attempt
  • Expect to feel pain immediately after
  • The area of where you had your wart might scab, swell or become charred
  • Healing time is two weeks and in this time the area must be kept clean and dry
  • Possible side effect is scarring
  • Surrounding skin may turn lighter or darker
  • Can be done for plantar warts, common warts and filiform warts

This method can only be performed by medical professionals and in no way shape or form should you attempt to do this at home. Many people that use this method might only need one session, however it is not guaranteed that you will not get reinfected.

Cryotherapy (freezing):

  • Beforehand salicylic acid may be recommended to prep the skin
  • The top layer of the skin gets scraped
  • Using a probe, cotton ball or pyro gun, liquid nitrogen is put on the wart for 10-20 seconds
  • This feels like can feel like stinging, burning or an intense sensation
  • A blister or scab will form on the wart after 24 hours
  • The blister might be full of blood or clear
  • It is important to not pop the blister, this might cause an infection
  • Eventually the blister will either break or dry up and fall off
  • It takes about two weeks to heal
  • Can be done for plantar warts, common warts and other types of warts

Using at home freezing therapies may not be as effective as cryosurgery, and might require two sessions, that would be two weeks apart, depending on how big the wart is and how many there are, and performed by a healthcare professional.

Laser Therapy

  • The area of the wart gets cleaned and gets a local anesthetic for both lasers
  • One of two lasers are used either ablative or non-ablative
  • Ablative lasering vaporises the wart from the surface
  • Non-ablative burns the warts blood vessels from the inside
  • Ablative lasering does leave an open wound that takes about 1-2 weeks to heal, this is not recommended for people who scar easily
  • Non-albative doesn’t leave n open wound but a blister can form
  • Side effects for laser can include skin discoloration and possible scarring
  • Laser is normally considered a last resort for very stubborn warts

More than one session might be required when doing the laser therapy. Your healthcare professional will be able to guide you on how many you need to do and if you need to get it done in the first place depending on what the wart looks like.

Can You Prevent a Wart?

Some people are just more prone to getting warts than others. Children are also more likely to get warts because their immune systems are still developing and they share a lot of communal spaces because of school, sports, etc. Here are some ways you can prevent getting a wart:

  • Wearing shoes when you go into communal spaces, especially in areas that are moist
  • Avoid sharing any towels, socks, shoes or nail tools
  • Keep your hands and feet as dry and clean as you possibly can
  • If you have a cut or scrape try to keep them covered
  • Do not touch someone else's wart or a wart you have on your body

What you Can Consider At-Home

After you’ve had your wart seen and it's safe to care for it at home there are other methods that are less intense. With any care you do for warts we have to remember that they are known for being stubborn. Being consistent isn’t a consideration, but something we have to be disciplined about.
