The Truth About Age Spots & How to Naturally Care for Your Skin
As we age, our skin tells a story, one that reflects the moments we’ve spent in the sun, the seasons we’ve weathered, and the care we’ve given it.
One of the things we can start to notice on our skin as we grow older are age spots or dark spots, and the clue is in the name. Often called sunspots or liver spots, these small marks are a natural part of aging and can appear as early as our 30s, especially for those who love the sun.
While they’re generally harmless, they remind us of the importance of protecting our skin. The good news? With the right care and natural remedies, you can fade their appearance and embrace a more radiant, even skin tone.
What do age spots or dark spots look like?
- They are small, flat dark areas on the skin.
- They can vary in size, usually appearing on those areas that have had a lot of exposure to the sun - areas such as the face, hands, shoulders and arms.
- Age spots are also known as sunspots, liver spots and solar lentigines.
Should we be afraid of the sun?
We need regular exposure to the sun to boost our vitamin D levels.
Ideally, we need sunlight but we do not need sunburn.
We can use a natural sunscreen especially on the face or use a large shady hat. And limit our sun exposure to approximately twenty minutes a day between the hours of 10 am and 2 pm.
How can we avoid dark spots?
- While sunlight is very beneficial helping to increase your vitamin D levels, too much exposure can lead to sunburn. Ideally, you should protect those vulnerable areas (the face and the hands) by keeping them shaded from the sun.
- Avoid becoming selenium deficient. This essential trace mineral plays an important role in protecting cells from free radicals. Raw Brazil nuts are a good source of selenium.
-
Another suggestion is to ensure you avoid being potassium deficient which you can by including potassium-rich foods in your diet - apricots, avocados, bananas, cantaloupe, dates, figs, kiwi fruit and melons.
-
Avoid the use of commercial tanning lamps and tanning beds as these too can cause age spots.
-
